Anthony Powell

I am a self-taught photographer and film maker.
I have had to design and build many of the camera systems I use myself in order to come up with equipment that can still function in the extreme cold of the Antarctic winter.
I have worn out and broken numerous cameras taking the millions of photos that make up time-lapse image sequences that feature as a major part of the film. 

I have had footage in numerous museums, TV shows, films, and magazines, including New York Natural History Museum, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and most recently featured in BBC's Frozen Planet. The Frozen Planet team won an Emmy Award for photography this year. 

I grew up on a farm just outside Hawera, Taranaki, New Zealand. I worked for many years as a Communications Tech for Telecom New Zealand, working in the rural Taranaki region.

Started working in Antarctica in 1998
Worked 3 year-long contracts at New Zealand's Scott Base as their Telecom Tech
Worked another 6 winters and two summers at McMurdo as their Satellite Engineer and Communications Technician, doing regular traverses out across the Ross Ice Shelf to Black Island in the dark of winter
After proving myself in the field I also travelled to Antarctica as a recipient of the National Science Foundation Artists and Writers Grant, working full time on time-lapse photography and filming
I have spent over 100 months on the Ice now

I married an American lass from Orange County California (Christine) who was working at McMurdo Station while I was still working at Scott Base in the winter of 2003. We had our wedding in Antarctica during the winter months of darkness.
Because there are no jewellery shops in Antarctica, I made Christine a ring of Ice. Everything for the wedding had to be made with materials we had on hand, including the wedding dress, and hand-made paper flowers for the bouquet.
